Hello friends,
I've been listening to Highly Suspect a ton lately. I've heard them in the past, but something just hits different lately. And honestly, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they're my top Spotify artist this year.

If you've followed my blog for a while, you might've seen me write posts about Foster The People's Sacred Hearts Club and Hosier's Wasteland, Baby! These posts are so fun to me because, not only can I geek about music, but I can rave about design and makeup as well.

Highly Suspect very recently dropped their new album, The Midnight Demon Club, and not only am I in love with the songs on it, but I'm also captivated by the beautiful colors of the album artwork itself. I've been digging around to see who designed the cover, and the only information I can find is that it's potentially photographed by Christine (@liquormeat) on instagram.

Visually-speaking, there are some beautiful colors and contrasts on this album cover. I don't see this pink and aqua combination work well together much, so it's fascinating to see it pulled off in a modern and crisp way. In the center, we have Johnny, draped in thick and luxurious garments that have a ton of structure around the shoulders. He's also wearing a showstopping headpiece and shimmery mask. I also appreciate that he's posed in such a monarch-portrait type of way. On either side of him are the rest of his band mates, wearing all black, with their heads turned towards him. This is where that contrast of the black against the overexposed bright pink and the patchy teal background comes into play.

When it comes to the music itself, I feel like it's a journey. We begin with Highly Suspect's notably bold sound, the one we've all come to love. We keep building on this until we reach a song in which Rich, their guitarist, takes over vocals. It's a slow acoustic song called Wild Eyed Son, and it's soothing as hell. Right after that song, though, we hear audio of a woman laughing, an introduction into a juxtaposing song where Johnny screams through the majority of it. This song, Pink Lullaby, honestly is one of my favorites on the album. I love the passion and the lyrics throughout.

After Pink Lullaby, we're completing this sandwich where we're back in some more of their traditional-styled songs, like New California and Cool Kids, that have that boldness that really makes Highly Suspect so electrifying. The album simmers to an end with Love Like This and Evangeline.

Beyond this album, I want to give credit to a couple of other songs that I love. Of course I love the song Lydia, because not only is it named after me, it also just never gets old. Also, watching them perform it on the pre-show for the Grammy's was iconic. The next song I love is Bath Salts. Nothing beats scream-singing the bridge to this song with my windows rolled down in the car.

Other songs that deserve love are 16, Serotonia, and Arizona (Rich again...he makes me want to cry). I plan to see these angels in concert, so I'm fully prepared to scream-sing my heart out.

Anyhoo, into the makeup! I had a lot of fun pairing these colors together, and I hope you enjoy my tutorial. As I tend to acknowledge in other beauty posts, a lot of my makeup is old. For the past couple years, I've only been trying to buy vegan/cruelty-free cosmetics. So any makeup that isn't to those standards is probably old/expired. I try to use my makeup until it's done for, as to not be wasteful. But alas, bring on the makeup look.

The Look

I started out the look by moisturizing, filling in my brows a bit, and patting some foundation over my blemishes to get a tidy base.

Next, I dabbed some white shadow in the lid to make the pink shadow I'll be adding in the future to pop even more.

I also added a pinky shade, one that was similar to my skin tone, to the lid, crease, and under my brow bone to conceal some of my blue veins. I do this just, once again, to make the makeup look feel more tidy.

Next, I added a shimmery teal shadow to my lid.

I followed that up by adding a matte teal shadow into my crease, blending outward. At this stage, I'm still leaving the white inner corners alone.

I then added a slight highlight under my brow, blended it into the teal shade, and then wrapped that teal color under my eye in my lower lashline.

Next comes the magic touch! I used my pinky finger and dabbed a vibrant pink shadow into the inner corner of my eye, on top of that white base I laid down earlier on. I also tried to carry that pink under my eye a bit and blend it into the blue.

After cleaning up some of the fallout under my eyes, I did a fun graphic liner that dipped into the inner corners of the eye and trailed out to be a normal cat eye flick. I then added an additional flick underneath the cat eye. I wanted extra details to feel sort of reminiscent of all the detailing on Johnny's outfit on the cover.

And lastly, to complete the look, I added a matte lip, some bronzer, liquid highlight, mascara, and some setting spray to pull it all together.

And yeah! That's the look. I hope you folks enjoyed the makeup and the little graphics I made. I definitely recommend listening to Highly Suspect, even watching some life performances.

Thanks for checking in, and keep on grinning!
